Natural Osteoporosis Treatment and Prevention

The purpose of osteoporosis treatment is the prevention of bone fractures by stopping bone shrinkage and increase bone density. Although early detection and timely treatment of osteoporosis can substantially reduce the risk of future fracture, none of the available treatments for osteoporosis are fully cured. In other words, it is difficult to completely rebuild bone that has been damaged by osteoporosis.

Therefore, prevention of osteoporosis is as important as treatment. Here are some natural treatment and prevention for osteoporosis:

Eat a Balanced Diet

An optimal diet to prevent or treat osteoporosis include eating an adequate number of calcium and vitamin D, which are an important nutrient to maintain proper bone formation and density.

Experts recommend that pre-menopausal women and men to consume at least 1000 mg of calcium per day, this includes the calcium in food and beverages plus a calcium supplement. While postmenopausal women not taking estrogen should consume 1500 mg of calcium per day.

The main dietary sources of calcium are milk and other dairy products, like cottage cheese, yogurt and vegetables such as broccoli and spinach.

Stop smoking

Stop smoking is highly recommended if you are at risk of osteoporosis because smoking is known to accelerate bone loss. One study showed that women who smoke one pack per day throughout adulthood had a reduced 5 to 10 percent in bone density by menopause, resulting in an increased risk of fracture.

Limit alcohol intake

Drink excessive alcohol can increase the risk of fractures due to increased risk of falls, poor nutrition, etc. If you drink alcohol, limit your alcohol consumption to no more than one drink of alcohol a day for women and no more than two drinks a day for men.

Exercise regularly

Exercises can improve bone mass in premenopausal women and help maintain bone density for women after menopause. It also can reduces the risk of hip fractures in older women as a result of increased muscle strength. Most experts recommend exercise for at least 30 minutes, three times a week.

Some of the recommended exercises include weight-bearing exercise, cycling, walking and jogging. Before starting an exercise program, be sure to review your plan with your doctor.
