9 Causes of Night Sweats
Night sweat is generally referred to as excessive sweating during the night. Sweating is a normal reaction when the bedroom is too hot or you’ve put too many blankets on your bed.
A night sweat is defined as a sudden hot flash occurring at night that can cause you to sweat profusely, sometimes drenching your clothes and bed sheets, even if your bedroom temperature is cool. Therefore, night sweats are not necessarily caused by hot environment but it is rather cause by some underlying medical conditions.
Night sweats can disrupt your sleep and cause sleeping disorders. There are several reasons that can cause night sweats, and some of them can be quite serious. It’s best to work with your health care provider to ensure that nothing serious is going on.
Bacterial infections, such as endocarditis (inflammation of the heart valves), osteomyelitis (inflammation in the bones), and abscesses can cause night sweats. Night sweats are also can be caused by HIV infection.
Women with menopause will experience hormonal changes, which are also accompanied by symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and increased anxiety or irritability.
3. Low Testosterone
Men who have very low levels of testosterone may experience night sweats. As a man begins to age, his levels of testosterone will decrease gradually until he begins to experience the symptoms of andropause, which is similar to the menopause stage in women.
Lymphoma is a type of cancer that attacks the lymphatic system. Since lymphoma interrupts your immune system, it can cause severe night sweats as well as itchy skin, fatigue and uncontrollable chills.
5. Idiopathic Hyperhidrosis
Idiopathic hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterized by excessive sweating that is not part of the normal thermoregulatory response. It isn’t dangerous, just annoying.
6. Low Blood Sugar
Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is one of the potential causes of night sweats. If you’re having night sweats due to hypoglycemia, eating or drinking something sweet like honey or sugar could help you stop your night sweats.
Taking certain medications can cause night sweat as well. Antidepressants are a common type of drug that can lead to night sweat. Other drugs that have been linked to night sweats include psychiatric drugs and fever-lowering drugs, such as aspirin and acetaminophen (paracetamol).
People with prolonged stress or anxiety problems can experience sweating as a symptom. When you’re stress out, your body may release the stress hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine. These hormones pump up blood flow and produce a warming sensation throughout the body therefore it can cause night sweats.
