10 Best Ways to Prevent Acne and Pimples

Acne is a very common skin disorder that affects millions of people around the world. It causes pimples on the face and also on the body such as chest and back.

Acne happens when the dead skin cells, oils, and bacteria clog the skin pores, causing inflammation of hair follicles. This occurs mainly during puberty, when the sebaceous glands are stimulated by increased hormone levels, especially the androgens, resulting in excessive sebum production.

1. Wash your face at least twice a day

It is important to cleanse your face at least twice a day; once in the morning and once at night before going to bed. It is essential because it removes the extra oils and dead skin cells from your face that can clog your pores and lead to breakouts.

Make sure to use a cleanser that suits your skin type. Select a hypoallergenic or acne-formulated product. Don’t use a highly perfumed, harsh cleansers as it can worsen the acne.

2. Keep your hands clean

You might notice that people who touch their face are often prone to breakouts. This is because the oils and dirt on your hands are constantly transferred to your face when you touch it. So, it is always recommended to keep your hands clean before touching your face.

Make sure to wash your hands with water and anti-bacterial soap to remove all dirt and oils from your hands.

3. Moisturize after each face wash

Most acne products contain ingredients that dry out the skin, so if you are using those products, be sure to use moisturizer to minimize dryness and skin peeling. Try an oil-free moisturizer which will hydrate the skin without making it look oily or greasy.

If you have an oily skin, try a gel-based moisturizer. Always hydrate your skin with water before you moisturize it.

4. Wash your pillowcases frequently

When you sleep, the dirt and oils from your face are transferred to your pillow. If you don’t wash your pillowcases frequently, the build up oils and dirt on your pillowcases can get into your pores, leading to breakouts. So, remember to wash your pillowcases frequently at least once a week to prevent oil build up on the pillowcases.

5. Keep your phone clean

Your phone is something you touch the most daily thereby transferring oils and dirt from your fingers to the screen. When you bring the phone to your face, the dirt transfers to your skin, causing acne breakout.

To prevent breakouts, clean the part of your phone that touches your face regularly and that will in turn keep your face clean as well.

6. Eat healthy

Diet plays an important role in preventing acne. Reduce the intake of unhealthy foods like greasy burgers, french fries, chips and soda, and eat more fruits and vegetables as well as whole grains, will undoubtedly help eliminate breakouts. Drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated and flush out toxins from your body.

7. Avoid smoking

In addition to being harmful to your body, smoking can damage your skin cells which can clog your pores and lead to the development of acne.

Smoking also makes you more likely to get acne scar by depleting the oxygen from your skin along with putting toxins into your pores. So it’s best to avoid cigarette smoking or quit it if you have already started.

8. Avoid direct sunlight

Too much exposure to sunlight can not only damage your skin but it also can worsen your acne. A tan and burn cause your skin to shed more cells which clogs the pores.

When you go outside, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., be sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. This will help keep your skin protected from the UV. Look for “non-comedogenic” on the sunscreen label if you have an oily or acne prone skin.

While scientists are still studying why stress exacerbates acne, but many believe that increased stress prompts your skin to produce excess sebum, an oily substance that combines with dead skin cells to clog pores. Therefore, stress management is fairly important.
