Constipation is a condition characterized by infrequent bowel movements or if stool is hard, dry, and difficult to pass. This happens because the colon or large intense has absorbed too much of water from the food while it was formed to stool. The slower the large intense moves stool toward the rectum and anus, the more water will be absorbed by the colon. As a result, the stools become hard, dry, and eventually lead to constipation.
Some people think they have constipation if they don’t have a bowel movement every day. However, bowel habits are different for everyone. For some people, three times a day is normal while others, three times per week is normal. The foods you eat, how often you exercise, and other factors can affect your bowel habits.
Constipation Causes and Risk Factors
Constipation can be caused by many factors. Here are some common causes of constipation:
- Lack of exercise
- Not eating enough fiber foods
- Not drinking enough water and other liquids
- Ignoring the urge to have a bowel movements
- Excess use of laxative
- Problems with colon and rectum
- Taking certain medications, particularly drugs used for pain (narcotics), nausea, blood pressure and depression
