Recently, WHO (World Health Organization) warned the danger of cell phones radiation which are classified as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”, the same category as lead, chloroform, and engine exhaust.
The declaration is based on the evidence in the study to those who used mobile phones extensively over a long period. They found that high intensity use of cell phones resulted in an increased risk of glioma, a common form of brain tumor.
The findings are the culmination of IARC meeting attended by 31 scientists from 14 countries including United Sates to examine hundreds of prior research results that have been published about the possible cancer risks posed by electromagnetic fields.
“There may be some risk, and therefore we should look at the relation between mobile phones and cancer risk”, said Jonathan Samet, a scientist at the University of Southern California, who led the group.
This finding is quite contrary to prior research results are also conducted by the WHO. In 2010, WHO released the results of observations during 10 years showed that there was no increased risk of brain cancer, particularly glioma and meningioma.
In a study involving 13,000 cell phone users in 13 countries, the duration of mobile phones use ranges from 2 to 2.5 hours per month. Whereas the maximum duration is 1640 hours over a period of 10 years, or an average 1.5 hours per day.
Currently, the European Environment Agency (EEA) has been pushing for further study. This independent agency revealed the cell phones can pose a same risk as smoking, asbestos and diesel fuel.
Related to the latest findings about the dangers of cell phones radiation, head of a prominent cancer research institute at the University of Pittsburgh sent a memo to all their employees to urge them limit the cell phone use because of possible cancer risks.
Many popular cell phones manufacturers have warned consumers to keep their device away from their body.
The Apple iPhone 4 safety manual advices, “When using the iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission via cellular networks, keep iPhone at least 15 millimeters away from the body”.
BlackBerry Bold suggests users to keep BlackBerry device at least 25 mm from the body when the BlackBerry device is transmitting.”
The logic behind these recommendations is that the further the phone from the body, the less radiation is absorbed. To reduce your exposure to cell phone radiation, you can use the speakerphone function or text messaging instead of talk to keep the phone away from the head.
